Ugadi is the most famous festival in south indis, ugadi mainly celebrated in Karnataka and Andra Pradesh.
The word Ugadi derives from the word Yugadi. 'Yuga' is the word for 'epoch' or 'era', and 'aadi' stands for 'the beginning'. Yugadi specifically refers to the start of the age we are living in now, Kali Yuga.

Pongal is an important festival of South India that falls in the mid-January every year. Pongal marks the auspicious beginning of Uttarayana, the Sun's movement northward & also the harvesting time. Traditional activities mark the four-days-long Pongal celebrations. Cows are bedecked with ornaments & taken out in processions. House entrance is decorated with beautiful Kolam designs. In Tamil Nadu, Pongal is also a sweet porridge recipe cooked from the new rice.

Karwa Chauth is a traditional Hindu festival for married women, and is celebrated in some parts of India.
This year Karwa Chauth is on Oct 17th 2008.
Married women fast one whole day without food or water for the long life of their husbands. The ritual signifies extreme love and devotion to the husband, as evidenced by the wife's willingness to suffer for his well being.
