India's election commission on Tuesday deferred state polls in the Kashmir region, which has been hit by a resurgence of protests against New Delhi's rule in recent months.

Election Commission chief N. Gopalswami told reporters that "considering all issues, no decision has been taken" on holding state elections in the disputed region.

Indian Kashmir was put under federal rule in July following the collapse of the state government over a land row that triggered a revival of anti-India demonstrations.
